The City of New Britain offers new officers a 25 year retirement under the state run MERF-B plan.
It also provides medical, dental, and optical insurance to the officers under Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield or Connecticare. New officers must sign a no-smoking affidavit as a condition of employment and must comply with the department's
weight control provisions.
We offer five different work shifts in Patrol and no
shift rotations. Shifts are chosen by seniority bid. We currently enjoy a 4/2 work week.
This means officers work four days on, then have two days off. We allow shift swaps. Under the recently approved
contract, trainees start at $47,017 per year. Pay increases, or steps, occur at four, sixteen and finally twenty-eight
months. Patrol Officers' top step of pay is $60,351 per year at present. We have a Civil
Service testing process for Detectives, Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains. New Britain residents get extra consideration
through the "Rule of the List." We also have longevity bonuses, as well as textbook reimbursement and educational
bonuses for members continuing their education. Our officers who are military reservists are partially compensated
during their call-ups for the difference in military to civilian pay. We also have a diverse department with many special
assignments and opportunities for training for those who are interested. See the Organization
link to your left for more details.
Officers are represented by the New Britain Police Union, A.F.S.C.M.E. Local 1165. The City of New Britain is an Equal Opportunity employer as well . We also give Veteran's preference of 5
extra points on their overall score at the end of the testing process.
